The purpose of SOLAR ELECTRICITY is to charge 12 volt batteries for RV lighting, stereo, TV, water pump and other 12 volt appliances.
An INVERTER is optional. It allows the operation of 120 volt appliances like blender, toaster, vacuum cleaner, satellite, VCR, microwave oven or items that draw up to about 2000 watts of energy from the RV battery. Note we did not mention roof air conditioners or electric refrigerators as they run for long periods of time and are best run from propane or generator when utility hook-ups are not available.
BATTERIES are the heart and soul of an RV that is electrically independent. A large and rapidly growing majority of Rvers are opting for solar power to keep their batteries fully charged, others have built-in generators or occasionally stop for RV park accommodations. The number of solar panels you select is not a critical matter when your RV already has an effective alternator or engine generator. Add panels and batteries as your lifestyle dictates. An alternative power source is an important consideration for those who "dry camp" for 3 days or longer. With proper planning and the right equipment, you can keep your batteries charged and live very comfortably without hookups for any length of stay without running the generator. Our customers enjoy this fact.
GETTING STARTED:
The process of changing sunlight to electricity seems very scientific and many assume it to be technical. Just the opposite. Adding a solar system to your RV may be as simple as having an extra light fixture or 12 volt outlet installed. Still, there are considerations: cost, space and efficiency-- just as with light fixtures. We encourage you to read and talk with other Rvers who are using solar.
